It was about time we took another road trip and what better reason than my birthday? A weekend of hiking, drinking wine, drinking beer (yes I see there’s a theme here…) All up a great weekend away! We stayed with a couple in Blenheim using airbnb (www.airbnb.com) – lovely views from the house and a tidy room to boot all for $85/night for the two of us.
Thursday morning was spent firstly by dropping off the cats for their very own holiday at the cattery! Tilly was quite unimpressed with the whole thing and was very vocal in the car on the way and then attempted to break out. Not quite up to Prison Break standards, she went for the more subtle lets try and climb up the grate on the window approach. A few minutes later after peeling her off of the window she seemed to settle down a little bit! Cherry on the other hand was almost blasè about the whole thing!
Then it was time for a trip to Adrenaline Forest in Chch, although the less said about that the better. Apart from a mild panic attack 24 meters up in a tree it was a pleasant experience!!! Yeah, lets just say my stress levels don’t take kindly to being that high up in gale force winds with trees that I am attached to waving around all over the shop. OK, slight exaggeration but you get the idea! Don’t know about adrenaline forest, felt more like cortisol forest to me.
We hit the road early afternoon after stopping in for a cuppa with the neighbours. The traffic was horrendous, couldn’t find anywhere to park and everywhere was busy…. not! The next day was spent hiking the very start of the Queen Charlotte Track in the Marlborough Sounds. The track winds around a series of different bays meaning coastal views the majority of the time whilst walking. We walked about 12km in total and felt pretty shot by the end of it and ended up in bed asleep by 9:30pm! Saturday was spent exploring the vineyards and tasting some wine and visiting the Moa beer brewery followed by dinner out in town. Sunday it was time to head home via Kaikoura.
