So, when a friend from work invited me to join her and some friends for a running competition I wasn’t convinced. Me? Run?Then she mentioned that you get to run through the biggest vineyard in NZ and there will be some samples to taste and, well, my arm was well and truly twisted!
The competition wasn’t too competitive, it was more about getting together with the girls and having a good time. You enter in teams of up to five girls and each run different sections in pairs (yakking along the way!) There was a mixture of different runs at different lengths all to be completed in order and the team who finished first won. If you felt too tired you were allowed to walk, they didn’t disqualify for not running the whole thing. I ran 11km across the whole day, which is something I never thought I could do. Especially as I have never been a runner and the most I have ever managed was 4.5km one week before the race! We were all shattered by the end of the day and relaxed with a few glasses of wine and lots of naughty food! The bach we hired had a spa, which went down a treat after a long day of running!
If anyone is interested in taking part it is called the Yealands Yak at Yealands Winery in Seddon. This year was the first time Yealands hosted it and the general consensus is that it was great! The atmosphere, the organisation and free wine tasters were top notch. When the race had finished Yealands started giving away glasses of wine for free, which was very much welcomed! Also, the run takes you through some of the most hidden parts of the vineyards in places you probably wouldn’t be able to reach any other way, which made it even more worth while. The views along the way were beautiful. Even the local girls who have lived in Blenheim for many years were amazed at just how stunning the scenery was!
